Science Week Fun

The Children learned how to make rainbows from using water and sunlight, mirrors and even CDs.

 They also learned how to make a wet slide and looked at an onion through a microscope. 

 

 

 

 

 

We also had a very special visit from Hilary the Hedgehog, who came into Second Class. The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting her.

 

GAMES IN THE PAST AND NOW

 

The children explored  games in the past and compared them to games now. It was discovered that even clapping games and rhymes were still popular today.

 

 

 

PICTURE FRAMES IN ART

The children made picture frames from lollipop sticks and each child decorated them in a unique way!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Van Gogh's Starry Night

In Art this month, the chiildren responded to the famous painting by Van Gogh, "Starry Night" They used black paper and pastel chalks to create their very own "Starry Night" art.

 

 

TREES - LOOKING AFTER OUR ENVIRONMENT

The children enjoyed a mini autumn fieldtrip in the school yard where they collected the leaves from the many native trees that surround the school before they fall, as winter approaches.

They were able to identify lots of leaves in their groupings.

 

 

 

TREE PRINTS

 

With some of the leaves the children collected, they made leaf prints in art. They turned out very well.

 

 

 

MATHS - PLACE VALUE

 

This month, to help the children with the topic of Place Value, they used straws to create groups of ten. They had great fun making the bundles and securing them with elastic bands.

 

Never Bored with Board Games

The children brought in their favourite board games in June. Playing with certain board games can really help children with maths and the children had fun while learning.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Second Class School Tour 2016

The children had a fantastic time at "Lets Go" in Gormanstown on tuesday 21st June. It was a perfect day.

In Maths the children covered Capacity and there was lots of fun measuring water with various containers!

 

 

 

GEOGRAPHY/SCIENCE

The children learned about different house materials across the globe. Also in conjunction with Geography we explored the science and properties of materials. We also looked at building houses from different materials and discussed the advantages of some building materials in terms of climate and durability. Here are some of the small models the children made:
