Second Class - JT

The Month of May

SESE

This month the children looked at Ants. They did the story "The Ant and the Dove" and in Science, they were able to name and label the body parts of an ant. The children went outside and they looked at how ants moved in their environment. They wrote a short report on their mini field trip.

GEOGRAPHY

This month, the children were very interested in learning about how to look after their environment. They investigated the affects of air and litter pollution. They made a fantastic poster to highlight the issues which they had learned about.

SCIENCE

Second class planted some sunflowers and brought them home this month. With the summer here, we hope the sun stays out and they bring an extra splash of colour to the gardens!

MAY - THE MONTH OF MARY

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH HOW THE CHILDREN LEARNED THE TIMELESS HYMN "THE BELLS OF THE ANGELUS"

THE CHILDREN MADE A SPECIAL TRIP TO THE ALTAR IN THE SCHOOL TO SING THE HYMN AND PLAY THE TIN WHISTLE. IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL MOMENT.

Ireland is

The second class did some great work recently on Ireland in lieu of the celebration of Ireland and 1916.

To conclude their work, they put together a great photostory.

Take a look!

FUN LEARNING FEBRUARY

MATHS

One of the topics the children covered this month, in Mathematics was Weight. They experimented with various items which weighed greater or smaller than each other. They read and recorded weight in grams and kilograms using a weighing scales. They also counted on the scales, how many lego blocks it would take to weigh the same amount as various objects in their environment.

RELIGION

Preparation for First Penance is well underway.

The children made their own sheep to be placed on a poster for the church when they attend their First Penance. I wish them my very best as they embark on their continued journey towards the Sacrament of Communion.

THE ART OF HEARTS

The children began the process of cutting out hearts from material. They then put a mixture made from flour and water on them and left them to dry. Afterwards, they painted them using food colouring. They were very proud of their achievements. There was a lovely verse added to create a Mother's Day picture.

Art

The children learned about the life of Painter Paul Cezanne and then drew and painted their own still life pictures. They turned out really well.

MATHS

In Maths the children learned about Hundreds, Tens and Units. They made groups of one hundred using straws in batches of tens and it made understanding the concept a little easier!

RELIGION

In class, we were exploring the theme of being connected.  The children made beings from lollipop sticks and they put them on a poster.

History

Second Class looked at the history of the Bicycle this month and created a wonderful timeline listing the main advances in the bicycle from the past to the present.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A GREAT 2016 TO ALL

In Science in December, the children planted runner bean seeds in cotton wool. Each group had a specific task of using various amounts of water to see which ones would germinate first.

EASTER 1916 RISING PROJECT WORK

The second class children made a special project when the soliders came to present the Irish Flag and Proclamation to the school on Tuesday 8th December.  A special thank you to Daniel Heverin for making the Nelsons Pillar and Cian Prior who made O' Connell Bridge for the project.  A number of children played the tin whistle for the ceremony and did a fantastic job. All of the children played a huge part in this day and well done all for all the hard work put in.
