TREES - LOOKING AFTER OUR ENVIRONMENT

The children enjoyed a mini autumn fieldtrip in the school yard where they collected the leaves from the many native trees that surround the school before they fall, as winter approaches.

They were able to identify lots of leaves in their groupings.

TREE PRINTS

With some of the leaves the children collected, they made leaf prints in art. They turned out very well.

MATHS - PLACE VALUE

This month, to help the children with the topic of Place Value, they used straws to create groups of ten. They had great fun making the bundles and securing them with elastic bands.

Never Bored with Board Games

The children brought in their favourite board games in June. Playing with certain board games can really help children with maths and the children had fun while learning.

In Maths the children covered Capacity and there was lots of fun measuring water with various containers!

GEOGRAPHY/SCIENCE

The children learned about different house materials across the globe. Also in conjunction with Geography we explored the science and properties of materials. We also looked at building houses from different materials and discussed the advantages of some building materials in terms of climate and durability. Here are some of the small models the children made:

Plastic

LEGO

The Month of May

SESE

This month the children looked at Ants. They did the story "The Ant and the Dove" and in Science, they were able to name and label the body parts of an ant. The children went outside and they looked at how ants moved in their environment. They wrote a short report on their mini field trip.

GEOGRAPHY

This month, the children were very interested in learning about how to look after their environment. They investigated the affects of air and litter pollution. They made a fantastic poster to highlight the issues which they had learned about.

SCIENCE

Second class planted some sunflowers and brought them home this month. With the summer here, we hope the sun stays out and they bring an extra splash of colour to the gardens!

MAY - THE MONTH OF MARY

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH HOW THE CHILDREN LEARNED THE TIMELESS HYMN "THE BELLS OF THE ANGELUS"

THE CHILDREN MADE A SPECIAL TRIP TO THE ALTAR IN THE SCHOOL TO SING THE HYMN AND PLAY THE TIN WHISTLE. IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL MOMENT.
